2013 Season

Excavations are planned at the sites of Gird-e Dasht and Qalaat Mudjesir in the summer 2013. These sites were investigated in May–June 2012, and survey artifacts indicate important early Iron Age ocupations at both. Gird-e Dasht is a high complact mound just outside the modern city of Rowanduz/Soran. Excavations here will provide a long stratified sequence of remains that will facilitate developing a regional archaeological chronology for this virtually unexplored area. The highland site of Qalaat Mudjesir will provide information on upland settlements in the early Iron Age in the area believed to be ancient Musasir. A goal of the project is to determine the degree and nature of interaction between this region and neighboring Assyria in the Late Bronze and early Iron Age.
